“Viciously Anti-Gay” Bishop Appointed to San Fransico Diocese

He’s Under-fire: Bishop Salvatore Cordileone Has Been Given a Battle

What does the LGBT think about Bishop Cordileone? Pope Benedict XVI Names Viciously Anti-Gay Priest As Archbishop Of San Francisco: ThinkProgress LGBT “Pope Benedict’s choice of Cordileone is exactly wrong for the diocese of San Francisco, a city with a storied history of LGBT pride. It is a further step in the Vatican’s dedication to use Catholic doctrine to keep LGBT Americans suppressed and with fewer rights.”

Bishop Salvatore Cordileone Defending Traditional Marriage

The Vivificat reports: As many of your know already, The Holy Father has named Bishop Salvatore Cordileone of Oakland as the new Archbishop of San Francisco. He will be succeeding Archbishop George Niederauer, who is retiring for health reasons.

Bishop Cordileone has been instrumental in the drawing of Proposition 8, which outlawed same-sex marriage (SSM) in California, a fact not lost on defenders of SSM, whose reactions range from consternation to outright anger and even hatred by supposedly Christian ministers. You may sample the reaction here.

According to the San Francisco Examiner,

Asked at a Friday news conference about his support for Proposition 8 in 2008, Cordileone stressed that the church remains open to LGBT individuals.

“We need to learn, continue to learn, how to be welcoming — let them know that we love them and we want to help them, and that our stand for marriage is not against anyone, but it’s because we believe this is foundational for the good of our society,” Cordileone said.

As Archbishop of San Francisco, Bishop Cordileone will continue with his duty to proclaim by word and example to a mostly unreceptive audience the teaching of the Catholic Church regarding chastity and homosexuality, as explained in the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

Chastity and homosexuality

2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,140 tradition has always declared that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.”141 They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.

2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. They do not choose their homosexual condition; for most of them it is a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.

The world, the devil, and the flesh reject this simple message, calling “bigots” and “haters” those who uphold it. Therefore, let us pray for the success of Archbishop Cordileone’s new mission in the Church, as well as for his physical and spiritual protection.

P.S. – Would you do Courageous Priest a favor and share this info with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or Email right now? We truly appreciate it. Or leave a comment, we would love to hear what you think.

  • Which ever you call it same sex relationships are NOT normal or natural, passion for member of the same sex was the cause of God’s anger and total destruction of Sodom and Gemorah. It is a perversion and wrong. Enough said.

If all the shaded area of the article above comes from the San Francisco Examiner – then they are using the incorrect version of the catechism printed and promulgated by the USCCB in 1994. The errors that were published (by the USCCB) in the English catechism (that was promulgated by the USCCB from 1994-1997 – until the APPROVED English version was published in 1997) is STILL ON THE VATICAN WEBSITE! – over 100 changes had to be made by the English translators before the Vatican would/could approve it. #2358 in the USCCB version says, “they do not choose” – that was NOT what the latin, Italian or german stated in their original translations – . They ALL stated “This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial.” –

Thank you Nick. I have been so blessed to reach this special place with God. Many see it as impossible. However with prayer and a devoted commitment it can be done. God bless.

Br. Christopher Sale You have my deepest respect and compassion for the position you have taken, as I realize that it must’ve been and may still be a difficult place to be.

Straight men also, obviously, have issues with lust, though it may be more common and understandable for a hetrosexual male, nonetheless to indulge it is to sin.

lisag, I agree. The Christian church and the clergy were once the moral barometer of our society. The clergy were well respected and honored; thier advice taken with positive consideration.

They took public positions on societal morality, outside the four walls of their church building.

If and when they abdicate thier role as moral advocates, that vacuum will be filled by other less desireable, worldly proponents.

Priests and ministers should be able to tell it like it is at the pulpit, without fear of repercussions.

The church is in a sad state. Thank God for Bishops like this. It is said that 80% of Catholics in the pews no longer agree with the teachings of the church. Most of these people are standing in line for communion with a little remorse and a lack of moral conscience. As a celibate gay I’m totally shock when I see practicing homosexuals in line for communion. Homosexual behavior is sinful. Gays debate me all the time about this. My conversion has disassociated me with all things gay. I pray the gays will find the peace I have found. I would never return to that life. God bless the men and women to stand up for the teachings of the church. Since my conversion I’m a Catholic brother. I’m living proof that the course can be reversed.

  • What a blessing to have Bishop Cordileone! I will be praying for him.

  • Our family will pray for Bishop Cordileone. May God give him strength and courage. We love him.

  • I”d like to treat Bishop Cordileone to dinner at Chick fil A. He is great and a very brave person to go into gay infested San Francisco. Of course, he does have the Army of God with him. May God bless him and keep him safe and effective in his defense of the Catholic Church.

  • SEX OUTSIDE OF MARRIAGE IS A MORTAL SIN …SAD TO SAY WE DON’T HEAR SERMONS
ON THIS ANYMORE…SO MANY PRIESTS DON’T HAVE THE COURAGE OF THEIR CONVICTIONS.
GAY SEX IS EVEN WORSE, IT’S A PERVERSION AND OFFENDS GOD. MAN WAS CREATED FOR
WOMAN. TOGETHER THEY BRING LIFE INTO THE WORLD AND KEEP THE HUMAN FAMILY
ALIVE AND GROWING….GAY SEX ONLY BRINGS SADNESS AND SIN. IT’S GOD’S WAY OR THE
HIGHWAY (HELL) OUR BISHOPS AND PRIESTS NEED TO GET A LITTLE BACKBONE. BEING
ATTRACTED TO SOMEONE ISN’T A SIN BUT PUTTING G THE MOVES ON THEM IS.
    …….DAVID….

It’s very hard to believe that we can’t find some American trained Bishops. As usual we have a Roman trained bureaucrat with less than 10 years of parish experience.

  • Yes! I will be praying for Bishop Cordeleone, as well as all of the shepherds that our Heavenly Father has appointed to us, that they may be “worthy representatives of Jesus…leading us with love in the Way of Truth.”

Isn’t the problems that sin has not been defined from the pulpit? It could be homosexuality, using contraception, living together, casual sex or whatever the sin is. The pews are filled with sinners and yet we don’t see living together bingo or alcoholic softball or wife beater pot luck. The fact is is that the gay community is not going to admit they are sinning, especially in SF where they have huge political clout. Being a Christian is suppose to change you. It is challenging and just because a sinner does a good deed such as adopting a child does not make the sin go away. The sin is still there and separating the sinner from God. We need to pray for all sinners and ask the Lord to have mercy on them.
