Will Self-Proclaimed Catholics Realize Their Scandal?

“Examine yourselves, to see whether you are holding to your faith.
Test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you?
Unless indeed you fail to meet the test!” 2 Corinthians 13:5

by Fr. Daniel E. Doctor, Michigan:  Wow, the elections are over – at least for a few years. I am not sure about you, but I know I am glad to be rid of all the advertisements, the TV commercials, the constant interruption at dinner time about who we should vote for and why. I am glad that we are done with all of the bulletin inserts, booklets, and flyers – trying to cram a year’s worth of religious education about the Catholic Church’s position on Life, Liberty, and traditional marriage all within 2 months.

Being human, and therefore tempted by the Evil One just like the rest of us, I sometimes think it would be so much easier for me to just be silent and go with the flow of our modern culture. To become a modernist or a liberal and talk about happy things – about salvation without effort – how we are all saved – and God is going to let all of us into heaven without any real effort. To water down our Catholic faith -or at least not to stand for it – or to make it easy for us, by going with everything and defending nothing. To say everything is allowed – go and drink and be merry for tomorrow we die.

Eat, Drink and Be Merry ... for Tomorrow We Die

Are We Scandalous Catholics?
Eat, Drink and Be Merry … for Tomorrow We Die!

The culture and the devil make it sound so good to let go of our moral conscience, to go through life without any religious values and to be uncaring of those around us.

It would be great to teach and preach that whatever makes us feel good is OK and being able to have everyone happy and joyful as they leave after Mass – because whatever lifestyle we pick, whatever sin we choose, is just fine with the Church because we are all free. To be like the rest of the nation where 20% are atheists and where over 30% have a cold-hearted belief in God. To be like the 70% of self-proclaimed Catholics who never go to Mass on Sunday or any other day of the week, who can vote and act any way they want – no matter how scandalous and still remain Catholic. Or like the 80% of so called Catholics who have not been to the sacrament of confession in more than a year.

Our political leaders make it sound so liberating; to go through life getting all the free stuff the government can provide – acting like I am entitled to it and it is my right to have it. Not really caring who I take it from – or hurt by my selfishness – or how out of control my appetites are – letting others do for me what I could do for myself.

It must be great to live without morals, …

or a faith belief, where I can indulge in every selfish appetite and vice and be praised for it and even get legal rights to protect my immoral selfish behavior. To be able to live in a way that leaves nothing but a wake of destruction in my path because I have the right to do whatever I want.

It must be a good time – or at least it is made to seem so – to be part of a nation where there are billions of dollars wasted on things like pornography, adultery, fornication, and sodomy. To just “have a good time” without ever feeling guilty or responsible for my actions. To be able to do whatever I want; whenever I want without feeling bad about it.

The Devil makes us believe …

that it must be a great time, being a slave to our emotions and appetites – always happy; always fulfilled. To believe that hell is the best place to have real fun – heaven sounds boring – a place where we can come to this – that we could all just get along…but there is also another part of me – that is called to holiness in both my words and actions – a holy part of me – deep inside me – that realizes that God is doing something in the midst of all this craziness – something in the hearts of His faithful priests and bishops who are loyal to the Holy Father and Holy Mother Church as well as many faithful Catholics – and I know it because I can feel it every time I come before our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration – that we are on the verge of something that will be the most wonderful thing in the history of the Catholic Church in America – something that has never been seen in the history of the Church.

Jesus tells us plainly in the Gospel; “Do not think that I have come to bring peace. I have come not to bring peace but rather the sword.” He brings the sword because the sword makes people snap out of the mediocrity of the mainstream liberal Bishops and priests have left us drowning in for over 50 years. He brings this sword so that we can repent and change and move forward as faithful Catholics. For it is better for us to save our souls than to gain the whole world.

The Church militant needs warriors –

faithful Catholics willing to fight for what our Church stands for and be willing to shed our blood for what it stands against. We don’t need a American Catholic hierarchy, who, knows how to sit and dine with the “Anti-Christs” that surround us. In the near future, no one will want to care about priests and bishops that are “elegant” and “politically correct.” The people of God need bishops and priests who know how to fight evil when they encounter it, not sit it down and have a nice talk with it.

This is what we see in the History of the Church if we choose to study it – when things get tough – and they sure are going to get tough now, if you are willing to remain a good faithful Catholic – then the people of God will turn to strong warrior priests and other strong Catholics – so soon they will be turning to us – and we need to be ready to stand with Christ and His Holy Mother come what may – even if that means the shedding of our blood for the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church and all She teaches.

So I say it again – “Give me Liberty – or – Give me death.” For I do not wish to live in this world – if I am not free!

P.S. – Would you do Courageous Priest a favor and share this info with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or Email right now? We truly appreciate it. Or leave a comment, we would love to hear what you think.

I wonder why God didn’t look down on the Europeans came and took the native Americans lands. Brought people from Africa and treated them like animals. Surely God was upset?

Father, thank you for this wonderful article! I worked to get Romney elected which was my way of battling the pro choice agenda and was so depressed when he lost. I know many Catholics that voted for Obama based on social justice. Where is the justice for the unborn? My only hope is that God will be bringing our country to its knees so that the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary will triumph. It can’t come soon enough for me!! God bless you for your courage and please continue to submit articles such as this one for those of us that thirst for spiritual nourishment!

Here’s some interesting statistics from a recent survey (Pew) on religion in America:
    Atheists: 1.6%
    Agnostics: 2.4%
The total of unaffiliated (Which doesn’t make them atheists.) is just 16.1% almost 4 percentage points that “Father” Doctor claims are atheists.

  • Excellent post. Thank you. Will have to open Face Book again to share it & I’ve been trying not to waste time there. I have only 1 question: why must parishes try “to cram a year’s worth of religious education about the Catholic Church’s position on Life, Liberty, and traditional marriage all within 2 months”? Why isn’t the Church teaching us all the time? So many are dying because they never hear anything except the gospel of feeling good & being nice.

You don’t become a “true” Catholic by sitting in church anymore than you would become an automobile by sitting in a garage.

Father, God Bless You!!!! My son is also a Priest and he thought this article was superb, sent it to some Priests who voted for Obama! We live in very evil times and they are getting worse, Our Blessed Lady begs us to pray continuously to turn the world around before the Punishment comes, but I am afraid it is a little too late b/c it has already begun!!!
My question is this, why do we not have more Priests like yourself?? We the Catholic flock are so in need of the Truth, a Priest on the Pulpit that can call evil like it is instead of worrying about being popular with his flock!! Jesus stated it as He was, the Son of God descended to Earth to bring the Truth which spells holiness; He did not hesitate to call certain actions evil like adultery, fornication, homosexual marriage, and murder. Now we are being faced with these horrendous evils and if we disagree with others, are made to feel like we are really out of the mainstream. It is time to either be against Christ or stand with Him! No time now for equivocation!

    Where’s my posting John?

    Hello Bill,

I am not ignoring you. I actually sent you an e-mail. I hope you have a good Thanksgiving.

    God bless,

The Truth hurts and most people can’t stand the truth. It is so much easier to live in a fantasy world and claim that those who disagree with you are unfair and mean.

Outstanding article – I wish the bishops who are meeting this week would read this. God bless you Father. I’m going to pass this article to my friends and family. (That picture is so disturbing – a bunch of pagans around the Blessed Mother?)

I am lost. I am weak and broken. I am a sinner and even more than that I am unworthy. Still, I will hold to my faith and stand with Christ and His Holy Mother. All glory be to God now and forever. Amen.

  • Thank you Father. I recently wrote that while I will try to forgive and will certainly pray for the people who voted for the same-old-same-old, I will stop being ‘nice’ to them. I think we do a real dis-service to their eternal souls if we behave as though this is just a difference of opinion. This is a matter of eternal-life-and-death. Really, thank you.

  • Danielle

Thank you for your words. Thank you for what you say and do. We must pray for our priests and bishops who are working so hard to tell us the truth. It is too bad that some do not really get it or think that their opinion is just as good as someone else.

Tom, wanted to add that I agree with what you have written too. There is no murky or opaque Catholicism.
And I, too, am on the ignore list in my parish. It is painful, but I firmly believe that Our Lord and Our Blessed Mother want me there.

  • Lorraine

Fr. Dan, would you like to come to my diocese and make the rounds of the parishes giving this talk? We could use you.
Mary and Irm, I’ve been accused of the same. Nor did I ever think things would get so bad. But they have. It has been a slow boil.
Glad to see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel now. I’ve been waiting for it.
God bless all Fr. Dan and all of you!

  • Another wonderful piece from Fr. Dan.

We must accept that the word “Catholic”, as a label outside the Church, is very weak. To those whom it applies, little commonality can be assumed (the same can be said for “Christian”).

It would be helpful, and far less scandalous, if we had a consistent way of referring to those who truly accept and follow Church teaching (or at least try to) from the others. FWIW, I use “faithful Catholic” for this purpose.
