We must prophesy! Our Vote is a Powerful Prophetic Act.
Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him that a great millstone were put around his neck. If your hand causes you to sin… cut it off… (Mk.9:38-48)
by Fr. Moe LaRochelle, Manchester, NH: Jesus invites us to make a decision to be prophetic about cutting off the cause off scandal as we prepare to vote.
When we consider the nature of scandal as described by our Catholic Catechism we can see how elected officials and candidates seeking office could fit the qualification for scandal as we study their platform, policies and intent. “It [scandal] can be provoked by laws or institutions, and by fashion or opinions…
They are guilty of scandal who establish laws or social structures leading to the decline of morals and the corruption of religious practice or making obedience to the commandments difficult and practically impossible. (ccc. 2286)
St James reminds us that prophets must address the scandal of the social injustices of his time—we too must prophesy.
- Come now you rich, weep and wail over your impending misery…
- Stored up treasure… wages you withheld… fatted your hearts… you have condemned…
- You have murdered the righteous one… (Js.5:1-6)
First, prophets must pray so that God’s power is behind their words.
For Catholics, our most powerful and effective prayer is the Holy Mass. The sacrifice of the Holy Mass is intended to bring reconciliation and salvation to the world at the pleading of those who assist in offering the Mass; “May this Sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world,“(Eucharistic Prayer III).
In the Holy Mass we pray with Christ to bring healing to America and cover this land with His mercy.
The urgent and dire need for this prayer is clearly in our face as we witness financial collapse and social strife of Europe. Indeed as we feel for our European brothers and sisters it is possible to hear the Holy Spirit counseling us to heed and take warning.
Prophets must beware and be brave. Yes! History demonstrates that our Loving God cannot stand by and allow His people to suffer the scandal of injustice and threats to the faith of His people. For we have already seen such a scenario described in the Book of Exodus when The Lord God sent Moses to Egypt.
It was a time of oppressive slavery, infanticide and suppression of religious freedom as Pharaohs’ policies were leveled against the People of Israel.
Moses responded to God’s call and accepted the prophetic anointing to stand against Pharaoh.
God continues raising prophetic voices even in our time.
- “As the Spirit came to rest on them they prophesied.”
- And Moses said, “Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets” (Num. 11:24-39).
- The Gift of Prophesy is continually poured out over the baptized as they are anointed, “priest, prophet and king.
And we must prophesy!
Yes we must prophesy because abortion is now the law of the land. And because our faith tells us it is an intrinsic evil. We must prophesy!
As a prophet, our life of non compliance and non participation in this intrinsic evil is a living word from God for all to see.
Our life of prayer to end abortion, is the use of the prophetic gift which has the force of Moses pleading for his people.
Holding true to our love for the Gospel of Life is a prophetic testimony that challenges policies which force us to fund abortion with precious tax dollars that could be better spent feeding the poor. Our vote is a prophetic act that cries out, “if it cause you to sin, cut it off.”
God has revealed to us His plan for marriage and family.
Yet, we live in a society that is compelled by legislation which sets itself against our conscience, our faith and our Loving Trinitarian God.
This too our faith says is an intrinsic evil.
As a prophet, our life of non-compliance challenges the lie of social caprice and makes us witnesses for the truth of God’s Plan for family and marriage which He designed to endure for eternity.
As a prophet, we pray with the conviction and persistence like Elijah, Elisha, Ezekiel, Jeremiah and Amos. Yes, we pray for a revival of family life in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Our vote is a powerful prophetic act that cries out, “We do not accept laws which define family and marriage in a way we find immoral.” Yet while such legislation demands “tolerance” for same-sex marriage, it punishes Christians for exercising the right of conscience against performing weddings, and services for which we find intrinsically evil.
Our vote is a prophetic voice that cries out, “If it causes you to sin, cut it off.”
As Catholic Christians, we must stand with our Church. We must stand with our faith as we prepare for the elections which are so near.
As we discern using conscience and reason, we may feel confused by political machinations of crafty speech. Therefore, we will look to the Holy Spirit and our Holy Roman Catholic Church for clarity through Her deposit of faith which is “The Light that shines on in the darkness and the darkness shall not overcome it.” (Jn.1:5)
Yes, as Catholic Christians, we must prophesy.
We must vote Prophetically!
The Lord God speaks – Who will not prophesy? (Am.3:8)
The Roman Catholic Church of Jesus Christ speaks, Who will not prophesy?
We must prophesy!
For if we do not, we cannot ask God to pour down economic blessings on America for poor, or rich or middle class while allowing these scandals and injustices against our faith to go unchallenged.
Give us the grace O God, to expunge the sin of scandal by our vote to “cut it off!”
“O God, you manifest your power above all by pardoning and showing mercy.
Bestow, we pray, your grace abundantly upon America and make those hastening to attain your promises heirs to the treasures of heaven” (Collect, 26th Sunday Ordinary time, adapted).
