Pedophile Priests are Just A Symptom of the Crisis in the Church.

Yes Perverts are Just A Symptom!
The Cancer is that There is No Real Belief
In the Supernatural!

Father Dwight Longenecker-What’s the real cancer at the heart of the church? Not pedophile priests…they’re a symptom of a much deeper problem. Gerald Warner at the Daily Telegraph let’s fly in this article about the real problem underlying the child abuse scandals. I think he’s on target in much of what he says.holymass

The secular press are fond of saying that the child abuse problem is caused by the demand for priestly celibacy. There is an underlying cause, but it’s not that. The underlying cause is that too many Catholics have lost the plot completely. For the last forty years the church has been infected with modernism, and the key tenet of modernism is that there is no such thing as the supernatural. What you see is what you get.

This serious sickness at the very heart of the church swept through monasteries, convents and seminaries. The honest priests, nuns and religious lost their faith and got out. The lazy ones stayed put and enjoyed a meal ticket for life. No longer believing in the reality and power of the sacraments, they drifted into a no man’s land in which they were priests, bishops and religious without believing in religion. What were they supposed to do? They decided to re-create the church as a kind of dining club with a social conscience.

When it came to sexuality, well since the invention of the pill, everyone else was playing around with whoever they wanted. The apostate priests had no reason to insist on such an outmoded thing as chastity, and if no one else had to be chaste, why should they? If they no longer had to believe in heaven or hell (you make your own heaven or hell here on earth don’t you know?) then there was no real penalty if your sexual tastes were, errm, unconventional. Homosexuality was presented as natural, and sex wasn’t for procreation, and everybody was sexually active, so why not play around with whoever you liked?

A therapeutic culture swept in and suddenly nobody was a sinner. “I’m OK. You’re OK.” You don’t need punishment or banishment. You don’t even need forgiveness and a demand for reparation. You need therapy. No wonder they covered up. In their anthropology no one was a sinner. No one was bad. They were just wounded. They were just sick. They needed help.

G.K.Chesterton said that “Every argument is a theological argument.” and it is always and everywhere true that a moral crisis is linked with a theological crisis. Benedict XVI’s letter to the Irish church rightly calls for a spiritual and liturgical and theological renewal. The pedophile priest crisis is not just a crisis of morals, but a crisis of belief.

Finally, this crisis of belief is not just a crisis among a few twisted and evil perverts. It is a crisis of belief in our whole church. Archbishops, Bishops, Abbots, Mother Superiors, Seminary Rectors, Theologians, Priests and people have all been swamped with something other than the red blooded Catholic faith of our Fathers. They’ve been tromping along like drug addled zombies following a feel good false religion that has been used to deceive millions.

We all need repentance in the face of this. We all need to turn again to the awareness that the devil is real, that sin is real, that nice people are capable of terrible evil. We must be on our guard. We must believe in the power and reality of the sacraments. We must be New Testament Christians with missionary zeal, the discipline of ascetical prayer and a warrior spirit.

Nothing else will do.

May God bless you Fr. Dwight. You have hit the nail right on its head in your discernment of these scandals and their real cause being the heresy of modernity. I would also add rebellion, not only to the Church but to God Himself. As pride, desires for pleasure, benefits, power and prestige, while throwing out the supernatural existence of God and the awesome sacrifice of Jesus on the cross to redeem us of our sinfulness and to open the gates of heaven and the Kingdom of God for us, one can get caught up in idolatry of others and of self. In addition, I believe that if one is taught and believes in the historical/critical method of Scripture study instead of Patristic study, while also pursuing the tyranny of moral relativism prevalent in our society today, I believe that he or she will have a recipe for disaster; i.e., a huge loss of faith! In fact, I have always believed that our priests, bishops and laity, who have been caught up in the scandals of pederasty, homosexual practices and pedophilia have had a massive loss of true faith even when they went through the motions of supposedly maintaining the Catholic faith. I also believe that many, if not all, of those clergy and laity alike, who have adopted a contraceptive, utilitarian and eugenic mentality, are susceptible to falling for the lies of those promoting a “Culture of Death” in our world today. Thank you Fr. Dwight Longenecker for writing this article and shedding a bright light into the darkness of the satanic spiritual warfare which all serious and committed Catholic/Christians have been enduring for the past 50-80 years or more…a darkness that has been getting even darker in recent years. We need more priest-writers and speakers like yourself to dispel the darkness forever. We also need to follow no one else but Jesus: the Way, the Truth and the Life” as well as to heed the words of our Blessed Mother in her many apparitions to “pray, pray, pray and fast on Wednesdays and Fridays” for the triumph of her Immaculate Heart over the supernatural satanic powers of darkness! May God help us all! St. Michael, the Archangel, pray for us! Trust in Jesus everyone and let your light shine!

NO AGAIN WE CAN PROVIED EXCUSES “WE ARNT THE ONLY CHURCH WITH THIS ISSUE” I AGREE BUT FOR NOW WE SHALL DEAL WITH OUR CHURCH AND OUR BORN CHILDREN. WE TRUSTED OUR CLURGY IN ST LOUIS AND ONLY FOUND OUT RECENTLY THIS PROBLEM HAS BEE GOING ON SINCE THE 1940’S AND NO MENTION OF IT BY ANY OF OUR CHURCH OFFICIALS OVER ALL THOSE YEARS. ab CARLSON PROVIDED A LIST OF INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE CONSIDERED MONSTERS BY OUR POPE. BUT IN LIEU OF TURNING OVER THE COMPLETE LIST HE OMITTED YEARS 2004 ~2014 SO THE SHELL GAME CONTINUES. I FOR ONE WANT ALL THIS TO END. THAT WILL ONLY HAPPEN IF OUR AB TAKES THE HIGH ROAD AND RESIGNS AND FACES THEMUSIC IN COURT.

  • Pedophile Priest issue in the St Louis Archdioceses seems to be a long problen 20+ yrs and to date nothing has been done. It will probably never be resolved as long as the Parishioners continue to bury their heads in the sand and do nothing. Attention all we have corruption in our Arch Dioceses headed by our Arch Bishop Carlson at the Moment. He has a problem of falling on his sword to protect these , as Pope Francis indicated, “Monsters”. Legal defences for these monsters offenders will cost the Arch Dioceses a lot of your weekly contributions. I for one have stopped contribuiting to anything that goes to the Arch Dioceses and have notified my Church do not provide any of my contributions to the Arch Dioceses until this issue is settled.
I cannot understand Carlson fighting for the unborn and not protecting our BORN CHILDREN from these monsters…No in lieu of turning themover to law enforcement he moved them all around the country as other church officials have done over the years against Vatican Instructions.
They Cardinal Mahoney, Cardinal O’Malley, Cardinal Dolan, Cardinal Regallie, Cardinal Burke, and other Bishops Seattle, Chicago, Kansas City and all the listed Pedophile Priest should all resign today…We parishioners to support our young should assure the law enforcement agencies in the State of Missouri takes action to take all to court in order to resolve this issue…

  • the church need to react quickly to the rapidity of change and show some understanding and compassion for persons who maybe cannot afford to educate themselves and family. We need to hear simple language from the pulpit and not smart ambiguous offensive phrases about all that is wrong in society. Here in Ireland we had an epidemic of sexual and pedophile behavior from clergy and bishops. even the Cardinal was implicated but he refuses to resign. Is there no one in charge to make him and the other resign as their reputations are stained. We need humility from the church; more prayer; our priests refuse to say evening mass on Sun as they want the day off from work. Priest are not hearing confessions with any commitment. We need new top management and real firm management from Rome to clear out all the dead wood etc and we need more prayer and facilitation of mass. Our parish priest refuses to say 2 masses as he maintains it is too tiring; maybe we need new priests from the their world as vocations have almost stopped

It isn’t just Catholic priests, nor even just clergy from other denominations. Most of the recent arrests in my neck of the woods have been of sports coaches and public school teachers.

I think the Catholic Church got put front and center on this because Catholics do represent a large proportion of the population. Big numbers and dirty events yield good news coverage.

  • Jen Foster

Great article! I also believe that it’s not JUST Catholic priests that sin like this. It is every religion. The main reason “Catholics” are in the front line of being attacked is that for years Catholics have always been held to higher standards than other religions! This is a human problem…not just a religious problem obviously! We fight against the principalities of darkness…

Well written article with much truth which I would share with my Christian friends-both Catholic & Protestants.

  • Rev. Billy Lewis

Awesome article Fr. Dwight. I have been saying the same thing to people. We have been created supernatural beings. When you try and kill the supernatural in our lives, everything goes berserk.
    Thanks Padre.
