Liturgical Abuses Lead To Serious Damage To The Faith Of Catholics!

“We” Are Not The Center Of The Liturgy!

Catholic Herald

LISA JOHNSTON | .His Eminence Raymond Cardinal Leo Burke | Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura | Archbishop Emeritus of St. Louis in front of the shrine to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Cathedral Basilica of SBy, Cindy Wooden – A weakening of faith in God, a rise in selfishness and a drop in the number of people going to Mass can be traced to liturgical abuse or Masses that are not reverent, two Vatican cardinals and a consultant have said.

US Cardinal Raymond Burke, head of the Vatican’s supreme court, said: “If we err by thinking we are the center of the liturgy, the Mass will lead to a loss of faith.”

Cardinal Burke and Spanish Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments, spoke  at a book launch in Rome.

The book, published only in Italian, was written by Fr Nicola Bux, who serves as a consultant to the congregations for the doctrine of the faith and for saints’ causes and to the office in charge of papal liturgies.

The English translation of Fr Bux’s book title would be, How to Go to Mass and Not Lose Your Faith.

Cardinal Burke told those gathered for the book presentation that he agreed with Fr Bux that “liturgical abuses lead to serious damage to the faith of Catholics”.

Unfortunately, he said, too many priests and bishops treat violations of liturgical norms as something that is unimportant when, in fact, they are “serious abuses”.

Cardinal Cañizares said that while the book’s title is provocative, it demonstrates a belief he shares. “Participating in the Eucharist can make us weaken or lose our faith if we do not enter into it properly,” and if the liturgy is not celebrated according to the Church’s norms, he said.

“This is true whether one is speaking of the Ordinary or Extraordinary form of the one Roman rite,” the cardinal said.

Cardinal Cañizares said that at a time when so many people are living as if God did not exist, they need a true Eucharistic celebration to remind them that only God is to be adored and that true meaning in human life comes only from the fact that Jesus gave his life to save the world.

Fr Bux said that too many modern Catholics think the Mass is something that the priest and the congregation do together when, in fact, it is something that Jesus does.

“If you go to a Mass in one place and then go to Mass in another, you will not find the same Mass. This means that it is not the Mass of the Catholic Church, which people have a right to, but it is just the Mass of this parish or that priest,” he said.

    Dear Courageous Priest
I would like to take this opportunity and thank you for the work you are doing! We give glory to God for that! Back to the issue above; The oneness of the Catholic Church has been distorted so much through Liturgical Abuses as mentioned by Our Lady in Fatima. Our Bishops should wake up and ask Our Lord to guide them in what they are suppose do! I was perturbed so much one time when I went to attend Mass in our Village Church. When time came for the offertory the Christians took the offertory dancing with all the vigor; on their way;while returning from the alter they were very happy and excited and charting with each other that they had expelled the cough from their chest!!!Did they come to treat the cough from their chest through dancing in the Church? Or they had come to attend Mass. Do we all understand the meaning of Mass? Holy Sacrifice of Mass is Calvary repeated daily on our Alters! Is there any moment you would dance when Jesus is being arrested and being tortured! Would you clap your hands at that moment? Would you wish Peace at that moment to any body? When the Priest who represent Jesus say to the Congregation “Peace be with you”! it means everybody present in the church at that moment has received the Peace and there is no need again for people to move around wishing each other sign of Peace and distracting each other’s attention from consecrating on the sacrifice of the Mass!I don’t blame the young generation so much because that is what they found but the old ones take the blame and therefore they should wake up; and do the right thing through teaching what is right and through action! The Catholic Church is founded by Jesus who is Holy! Therefore we are also suppose to be holy as the founder!!The Holiness has been destroyed because of our lukewarmness, instead of us leading and guiding our brethren; but we are instead coping and falling in the trap of the evil one!The harvest is rich but the labourers are few! Courageous Priest carry on!! We will support you through our prayers and action where we can! Wishing you God’s blessings always abundantly!! Ursula

These comments are right on target. The Eucharest should always be place on the tongue, Benedict even said that. Our church does not have kneelers but carpet. At first everyone stood during the consecration, but thats been changed everyone kneels now. We didnt have a crucifix when this church was built. but now we do, so I think this church has come a long way. The pastor we have now rings the bell as he enters from the sacristy to say Mass. I just wish people would stop this silly greeting of peace, it interferes with the flow of the Mass & during the Our Father prayer hold your hands in prayer instead of imitating the priest & holding your hands out, dont know how that ever got started in the first place. Maybe Im nitpicking, but thats how I feel. Also after receiving communiion, I wish they would stop the singing so one can consentrate on praying, its such a distraction. There should be as much reverence as possible, this is the house of God & He is truly present seems people forget that when they come in & sit down & read the church bulletin instead of greeting our Lord Hes the reason we come in the first place. Some priests actually talk to the people before Mass begins encouraging people to talk in church; setting a bad example. There are a lot of abuses with the hosts also, people come up to receive & hold out their pic to take a host home, that should never be allowed. How does the priest know what they will do with it. Unless they have special permission by the priest,no way. Ive heard some people actually go to breakfast before going to the person thats suppose to receive the host they have in their possesion. I could go on & on, but I think Ive made myself clear enough. None of this happened before Vatican 2

I thank God that I’m a craddle old fashion Practicing Roman Catholic…I do not take our Lord in the hand, never have, I do not shake hand with every tom, dick and harry…I miss not having the Tabernacle on the center of our church behind the main altar…if every church would put the Tabernacle back behind the main Altar there would be more reverence and honor to God in his House…..
Bil is someone that’s trying to disturb us Roman Catholic…just ignore him and pray for him do not answer him…there are many like him in our Catholic Church…
I miss a lot of the old traditions…Altar Boys…by letting the girls to do as the altar boys do is encouraging them to be ‘equal’ in the ‘priesthood’….a Sacrament Instituted by Christ it cannot be change,
this is one of the mistake the Bishops made when the “window was left open at Second Vatican II”
PRAY THE HOLY ROSARY DAILY, READ ABOUT ‘FATIMA ‘…..we are now praying the National 54 Day Holy Rosary Novena we are in the 7th day…find out about it and hop-on…
God Bless you all and our great country the USA, we need prayers for 2016 Elections….

Those of us who wanted to KNEEL for COMMUNION with GOD, we’re refused COMMUNION by the PRIEST, so YES, PRIESTS make it THEIR PARISH and HIS RULES, Those of us who wld not accept, left and TRAVELED 150 miles to a TRADITIONAL MASS, until some MONKS came from SWITZERLAND BUILT a TRADITIONAL MONASTERY HERE, WE are BLESSED NOW with 7 times MORE TRADITIONAL PRIESTS than the PARISH we left! They only have the ONE who runs a CIRCUS in HIS PARISH! One of the familia has a son who is now a TRADITIONAL PRIEST, another BLESSING! Other parishioners have trickled in from the other church!

I converted 8 years ago the traditional Latin mass means nothing to me. Also all the people born since Vatican II. If this was done by what ever Pope was at that time wasn’t he guided by God?

  • Edward Domina

I am fortunate to live close to several Catholic churches. Several of the priests take liberties with the Mass. Even if it is well-intended, it is unfair. I do not confront the Celebrant but rather go to a different Church. I take my envelopes with me.

Bill: You have missed the point entirely. As stated at the beginning, the Mass is NOT ABOUT YOU. It is Jesus’ Mass, not yours. You are doing your will, not Gods. You are praising yourself, not Him. And another reason, perhaps the most obvious one, why the Mass is supposed to be the same everywhere — because the Catholic Church is the universal church. It isn’t universal if it is not the same everywhere you go.

  • Andrew

Step 1: Find an FSSP church:
Step 2: Sell everything and move near it, as many have.
Step 3: Encourage others to do the same.

Bill is there a reason for you to be obnoxious
all the time? I pray you will stop attacking
    your fellow Catholics.

  • Bill

Truly Catholics, if that’s the way you choose to worship, have at it. Just don’t try to tell me how to worship.

  • Br. Christopher Sale

Padre Pio said the mass should not be rushed. I agree. Its sad to think that people can barely spare an hour for God a week.

  • TrulyCatholics

Bill: If the mass is “the same” everywhere – it allows people to be consumed, spiritually. If there is novelty, IT is “attractive” – we pay attention to the distraction instead of entering into the sacrifice, being absorbed in prayer and adoration. That’s why the Tridentine is so magnificent – you move with the familiar rhythm of the mass, the chant, the prayer – it is so familiar, you often get lost in prayer and communion with the sacred
. You are joined to Christ and the saints. It is a bit of heaven.

Kneeling to receive the Eucharist is a choice YOU get to make. Kneeling after receiving is YOUR decision to make – the USCCB/local bishop cannot take that from you. These are both immemorial customs (covered by canon law). And NO ONE can discipline you. ******* Here’s a link to the letter from the Sacred Congregation of Divine Liturgy and Discipline of the Sacraments. ********* From the letter: “In fact, as His Eminence, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger has recently emphasized, the practice of kneeling for Holy Communion has in its favor a centuries-old tradition, and it is a particularly expressive sign of adoration, completely appropriate in light of the true, real and substantial presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ under the consecrated species ****** RE: Kneeling AFTER communion – **** from the letter: “”Numerous inquiries” received by the BCL led Cardinal Francis George, chairman of the BCL, to submit a dubium (doubt, question) to the Holy See’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments (CDW) on May 26, 2003:

Dubium: In many places, the faithful are accustomed to kneeling or sitting in personal prayer upon returning to their places after having individually received Holy Communion during Mass. Is it the intention of the Missale Romanum, editio typica tertia, to forbid this practice?

Cardinal Francis Arinze, Prefect of the CDW, responded to the question on June 5, 2003 (Prot. N. 855/03/L):

Responsum: Negative, et ad mensum [No, for this reason]. The mens [reasoning] is that the prescription of the Institutio Generalis Missalis Romani, no. 43, is intended, on the one hand, to ensure within broad limits a certain uniformity of posture within the congregation for the various parts of the celebration of Holy Mass, and on the other, to not regulate posture rigidly in such a way that those who wish to kneel or sit would no longer be free.

For the life of me, I don’t see why the liturgy has to be the same for all so long as the key elements are there. I personally prefer standing for communion, but why not have a separate line for those who prefer to kneel and stick their tongue out?

“If you go to a Mass in one place and then go to Mass in another, you will not find the same Mass. This means that it is not the Mass of the Catholic Church, which people have a right to, but it is just the Mass of this parish or that priest,” he said.-
This statement is so true. It iss so aggravating for me if I have to go to another parish. I don’t know what to expect. (My parish is fairly traditional otherwise I would be a traveling pilgrim.) I can’t stand those parishes were the Mass is more of a “community” thing. I also miss kneeling when receiving Holy Communion. I think it makes it easier to for the priest. This book needs to be published in English. I just love Cardinal Burke. I wish he could be our next pope.

  • I too miss kneeling before the Eucharist Christina, I gave up receiving on the tongue as well; because there is no patten used and the minister was fumbling and regularly dropping the host on the floor. So I was obliged to hold out my hands…
I have six sisters and we frequent each others churches – I have almost “upped and offed” on several occasions; including when a football signed by local footballers was deliberately placed on the altar throughout Mass. It was for “charity purposes”. Fortunately we are able to encourage each other to remain steadfast; When at Mass, one wants Christ, and nothing less.

  • Christina

I miss kneeling before receiving the eucharist, and after. At the parish I am at now, we don’t kneel, instead we stand . My understanding is that it is decided by the bishop. If that is the case though, it is still not the same mass from one church to another. Our church has kneelers, but we only kneel once during the mass. It is during consecration. How can they all be having the same mass when you kneel at a church in one state, but in another, you stand instead?
