Cuomo Must Be Banned From Catholic Schools

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio Bars Governor Cuomo and
Legislators Who Passed Same-Sex Marriage Laws

By Tom O’Connell, –  Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of the Brooklyn Diocese has told officials at Catholic schools to bar Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and legislators who helped pass New York’s new law allowing same-sex marriages from speaking at their institutions.

DiMarzio also wants the schools to reject any honors or awards that Cuomo, who is a Catholic himself, or the legislators might offer them.

“Republicans and Democrats alike succumbed to powerful political elites and have passed legislation that will undermine our families and, as a consequence, our society,” the bishop said in a statement. “With this vote, Governor Cuomo has opened a new front in the culture wars that are tearing at the fabric of our nation.”

“The above request is intended as a protest of the corrupt political process in New York State,” the statement continued. “More than half of all New Yorkers oppose this legislation. Yet, the governor and the state legislature have demonized people of faith, whether they be Muslims, Jews, or Christians, and identified them as bigots and prejudiced, and voted in favor of same-sex ‘marriage.’”

After the June 24 passage of the Marriage Equality Act, Cuomo was quoted as saying, “With the world watching, the Legislature, by a bipartisan vote, has said that all New Yorkers are equal under the law. With this vote, marriage equality will become a reality in our state, delivering long overdue fairness and legal security to thousands of New Yorkers.”

The Catholic Church’s official stance on gay marriage is that it can be only between a man and a woman. After the law passed, New York’s eight Catholic bishops issued a statement expressing the fear that government sanctions against churches that preach traditional marriage could be next on the legislative agenda.

Stronger measures, Bishop! Cuomo should be excommunicated, at least no reception of Holy Communion!

    God bless you Bishop!

I applaud Bishop DeMarzio. Our Catholic schools are out of control with their inviting pro abortion, pro homosexual speakers to our Catholic schools. Cuomo, the Kennedys and the Jesuits that help promote these anti God practices should be automatically excommunicated. Take Pilosi, Biden and Sabillius with them.

    Dear Bishop Di Marzio,
I agree with you wholeheartedly. Thank you for speaking the truth! I wonder why all polititions who are Catholic and speak out against our beliefs are not excommunicated. Like Nancy Pelosi, good Lord, how much bad example is being given to our children.

St. John’s University is in Jamaica, New York which is in the Brooklyn Diocese. Bishop DiMarzio is trying to “stake out his ground” and to develop a feeling on how to handle this situation which is getting worse and worse. It would appear that it is time to “circle the wagons” and to call in Ward Bond. I support Bishop D and hope that this is only a first step.

First off, Frank is absolutely right. I’m a little surprised that John even posted his comment. Secondly, the Catholic Church or any other church for that matter is completely free to ban these unions for the adherents of their respective faiths. It is not necessary to attempt of force their beliefs on the total population.

This full of errors and creates fear. It would be unconstitutional to pass legislation forbidding the clergy from preaching in favor of traditional marriages. Also, the law does not force gay marriages, only permits them. The Church is so far behind theologically and in other ways that it needs to come into the nineteenth century (not even the 21st) first.

  • How is it that leaders don’t understand the tremendous responsibility they inherit as a result of the platform they’ve been given?
If they want to live by their own standards instead of God’s, OK then…Just say so instead of trying to keep one foot in the world and one foot in the church.

Cuomo should be publicly excommunicated. If he is allowed to receive the Eucharist, it will be a scandal. I agree with this bishop but stronger measures should be taken.

I am not sure what Bishop holds authority over this governor, but clearly by his actions–brazenly pro-abortion, pro-homosexuality and pro “same-sex marriage–openly and unashamedly, it seems, and also living as a divorced man with a divorced woman–not his wife–he needs, for the good of the faith, to be excommunicated.

The damage he is causing to Catholics and to the faith is devastating.

What Bishop DiMarzio offers is weak. Really, how many Catholic schools are about to invite this governor to their site? Is this the very best a Shepherd can do to make a point? I am sure this governor will not be affected in the least. He and his cohorts may be laughing already. At least, with excommunication, a soul may be brought back to his senses and repent which is its purpose. It would also act as a warning to other Catholics to stay clear of him and to avoid his propaganda.

    Pray for our Shepherds!
