Archbishop To Discipline Priest For Attending Dissident Conference

Archbishop Vigneron’s Warned Laity and
Priest Not To Attend Event

Detroit Free Press, by Niraj Warikoo – Saying there were significant abuses at a mass held Sunday by liberal Catholics, Archbishop of Detroit Allen Vigneron will commission a “careful and thorough review” of the services led by a local Catholic priest, a church spokesman said.

Defying Vigneron’s orders, the Rev. Bob Wurm, 78, a retired Catholic priest from Ferndale, presided over a mass at Cobo Center attended by about 1,500 Catholics. Most of them were liberals seeking to reform the church.

They were in Detroit for a conference led by the American Catholic Council, an umbrella group of 30 liberal Catholic organizations.

In a stern letter sent to clergy before the conference, Vigneron said that any priest or deacon who took part in the planned mass could face punishment and be defrocked. He said the conference would feature speakers who contradict Catholic doctrine and would not conduct a proper mass.

But that didn’t stop Wurm from leading the mass. And dozens of additional Catholic priests from metro Detroit attended.

“There were several, serious liturgical abuses at that service,” said Ned McGrath, spokesman for the Archdiocese of Detroit. “There will be — has to be — a careful and thorough review.”

It’s too early to say what exact punishment Wurm might face, McGrath said. Catholics at the conference defended their events, saying they are in accordance with the laws and values of Catholicism.

“He didn’t violate canon law,” John Hushon of Florida, a lead organizer of the conference, said of Wurm. “We went right down the straight and narrow.”

Wurm said he’s not worried about any disciplinary action. “I don’t see that happening,” he said.

The conference drew about 2,000 liberal Catholics who want laypeople to have more say in church decision making. Many also want discussions about women, gay and married priests, and greater accountability on the issue of child abuse by priests.

They said the conference energized them to go back to individual parishes to fight for change.

“I’m disturbed by what’s taking place,” said Robert Livingston, 72, of Berkley. “The church is going backwards. It’s more feudal.”

Also this weekend, a group of conservative Catholics held a rival conference in Livonia, where speakers spoke against abortion, contraception and gay rights.

I was hoping against hope that this article would be about Bishop Bob McElroy being disciplined.
He surely does need to be called on the red carpet for his recent actions in Modesto. He gives Bishops a bad name.

    Dear Children of GOD,

It causes me immense pain & heartache to read some of the comments posted here which deride the TRUTH.

JESUS CHRIST has clearly foretold that Satan will use all possible tricks & ways to deceive people and that many will fall, which we see happening all around us. Not only that, but that Satan will plant his agents & emissaries within the Church – lo and behold, it is there for all to see. However, despite cautioning us, we are all falling a prey to satan’s machinations & trickery.

GOD has no doubt given us a free will, but along with that HE has also given us the intellect & power to discern. If we fail to use these free gifts of GOD, then we are prone to fall, which sadly is the case.

All that we should do, and do unfailingly & unceasingly, is pray the Holy Rosary daily & offer it all for the salvation of mankind, because we are all GOD’s loving creation and HE sent HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON JESUS to save the whole of mankind.

Although everything unfolding these past few years has been foretold, the GOOD NEWS is, that at the end GOD & HIS CHURCH will triumph along with all those who abide by HIS WORD to the end.

    GOD Bless

They want laypeople too you have more of a say. That would lead to all kind of problems. First off laypeople are not as educated as priests bishops etc. Second the more people you have making the decisions the more problems will arise from it. I joined the catholic church last Easter. I am a 37-year-old gay man. That is something I cannot Control. But I firmly believe in Catholic doctrine regarding homosexuality. I love the Catholic Church and I’ve always felt a calling to join. I know it’s where God wants me. Having said that if homosexuals or women ever become priests I will leave the Catholic church immediately. As far as priests getting married I am personally against it but I am not clergy so I figure it’s up to the church. The Catholic Church is on a slippery slope of these days. I pray to God we keep or church based on the teachings of the good book God bless.

      Ryan,

I am actually saddened at reading the latter part of your post wherein you write – if homosexuals or women become priests, I will leave the Catholic Church immediately. Just before that sentence you write – I know it’s (Catholic Church) where God wants me.

Can I ask you a question ? If as you admit, the Catholic Church is where GOD wants you to be, then why are you letting the devil confuse you ? When GOD has led you to the TRUTH, live in the TRUTH till the end because GOD has called you. You are obeying GOD & your allegiance should only be to HIM. Your faith should not depend on what others (including the priests, nuns, religious etc) do. GOD has given every human being the intellect & the gift of discernment. Use it & use it wisely. When in doubt, seek answers from GOD & HE will guide you. Don’t go by your feelings & emotions. Have patience & GOD will give you an answer. You are called by GOD to the Fullness of Truth.

At the time of your judgement, you will only be asked by GOD to answer for your deeds/misdeeds and never asked to answer for anyone else’s actions (deeds/misdeeds) & similarly everyone else will be asked to account for their time & how they have lived their life whilst on earth.

My only advice to you is – trust in GOD & remain true to GOD’s WORD, not matter what tempest & storm you have to endure or face in your life. Remember, nothing comes to pass without GOD permitting it & also everything we have to endure / experience / face in this life, is a consequence of our actions (thoughts, words & deeds). A little introspection / reflection will help you realise the truth in the last sentence I have written.

      GOD Bless you.

The ordination of women can never happen because of the spousal relationship that God has ordained between Himself and His people. He is the Divine Bridegroom who seeks His bride. We are called to a nuptual intimacy with Jesus Christ which reaches it’s fulfillment by becoming ONE with Him in recieving Him in Eucharist.

Christ is the New Adam, and Mary (Icon of the Church)the New Eve. The first to have the Divine Intimacy within Her womb…the very first Holy Communion. Bishop Sheen goes so far as to say “Mary and the Church are the same thing” Indeed they are. What a wonderous calling for us…to become One in the Divine Intimacy with Our God and Savior! He desires that we consume Him and in response we learn, although slowly, to desire that He consumes us. To become lost in that Divine Intimacy is a foretaste of Heaven to come!

Bill, what stands in the way of liberal Catholics to understand doctrinal truth? A cardinal, bishop or priest who advocates for female ordination is dissenting from magisterial authority. 2,000 years of history and unquestionable clarity has been stated and confirmed over and over again. Doctrine cannot and will never be changed … otherwise, one may as well look for Truth in another church.

The question of a celibate clergy is a different matter, as you must know. It is a discipline that could be changed, although I’m not convinced it would be a good thing.

  • Bill

All the good Cardinal is saying is that there is no theological reason why women can’t be ordained and you can find some Biblical scholars that say the same thing. I would respectfully beg to differ with John Paul II on his stance on the Church’s authority to ordain women or even married men. If the Holy Spirit moves a Pope to change a rule, it will happen.

  • Bill

    John,

Show a little courage and integrity and print this:

Cardinal sees ‘no theological obstacle’ to women priests

There is no “fundamental obstacle” from “a theological perspective” for women to say the Mass from the altar, the Patriarch of Lisbon in Portugal said, according to a Vatican Insider report picked up by ucanews.com and a report on NCR.

It is instead a “tradition” that dates back from the time of Jesus, said Cardinal Jose da Cruz Policarpo, 75, who has just been confirmed for another two years at the head of the diocese of the Portuguese capital.

    __________

    Hello Bill,

You know me very well, Bill. I have very little courage and very little integrity. I humbly beseech you to pray for me that one day I will have that courage and integrity.

As fellow Catholics, we take Jesus’ words seriously when he told Peter,

And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.

Oddly enough, most good-hearted Catholics do not realize that Bl. Pope John Paul II exercised his God-given authority in declaring that women cannot be ordained priests. To prove that I am not making this up, I am giving the official declaration, which can be found in Ordinatio Sacerdotalis,

I declare that the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women and that this judgment is to be definitively held by all the Church’s faithful.

Bill, could it be any clearer than that? Check out what Bl. Pope John Paul II had to say. Here is the link to the official Vatican document.

So, Bill, what’s it going to be? Are you going to follow the Rock, ordained by Christ Himself? Or are you going to follow a wolf?

    Acts 20:28-30

Take heed to yourselves, and to the whole flock, wherein the Holy Ghost hath placed you bishops, to rule the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

I know that, after my departure, ravening wolves will enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

And of your own selves shall arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

I am looking forward to finding out your answer and all of your extra prayers.

Peace and prayers to you, Bill.

WOW!!! Look Fr. Corapi!!! It’s going to “take some time to decide what to do about this public abuse & heresy”!!! This priest has been doing “in your face” “liturgies” for years! Yet, @ 73, it’s “going to take time” to see if he’s REALLY a heretic! He’s not disobedient, he’s tolerant!! Ya see Fr. John, you’re just too hard on people!!! You hurt their feelings & lack ‘charity’!! You’re dangerous because you could cause some of them to think!!!
And Mr. Kelly, it’s not “judging others” to call Heresy what it is! It’s a SIN NOT to!!
Read the early Church Fathers!!! YA think Paul would have said, “oh my, what shall we do?”!!! It’s time for the laity to get a grip! Who sat by silent while the Modernists took over the church & seminaries the past 40-50 yrs? Who allowed the Modernist laity to badger Bishops to remove priests from their parishes because they talked about “sin” instead of women’s rights & really important issues? Don’t you get it yet?!?!?! God IS judging us!

  • Gene Kelly

Since I wrote the comment above it has been made clear to me that I am wrong to judge others. I am a great sinner myself and God has forgiven me so I do not have the mandate or right to hold others in judgement. For this I apologize publicly. I know the torment one can go through because of sin. Jesus loves all sinners and welcomes them into His loving arms where they are at. His divine mercy and love is beyond our ability to understand and He forgives and loves completely. I am just a broken man who has found The Redeemer to purchase back my blackened soul and the Savior to mend back together the shattered pieces of my life. So, am I wounded and showing it. Yes! Do I have a right to judge. No! Do I regret that I did. Yes! Please forgive me! I still believe in the model of the Blessed Virgin Mary and how she instructs us, the sanctity of marriage and in the right to life of all unborn children but I do not have the right to preach and judge as I did above. Jesus is compassion and love personified. He did not come to condemn but to save. Again, please forgive my pride and arrogance in judging others. Only God can judge.

  • I thank Archbishop Vigneron ; he is a true shepherd trying to protect us.I praise and pray for all the brave priests, Bishops and Cardinals who will support this brave man!!!!!!We all need to PRAY for all GOOD and FAITHFUL religious during these times. The people who call themselves Catholic should act so and define and defend the true faith not destroy it for either POLITICAL GAIN or personal pleasure. Those who want to be relected and call themselves Catholic ;but openly oppose the Church teachings should not only be refused Holy Communion but be excommunicated and soon PLEASE GOD!!If we stand by and allow pro-abortion politicians and same sex marriage promoters we stand to lose our Churches and as it is now many Doctors are leaving their practices as pro-life doctors. This is very prevalent in NEW YORK.This is an emergency that deserves a special Catholic Conference by all who lead the Catholic Church in this country. The media is so biased and liberal that we have practically lost freedom of the press.Everyone who disagrees with the liberal agenda is called a bigot, racial discriminator or homophobe,or religious extremist. It is very hard for one person without the backing of the Church to remove these religious from the practicing their counterfeit religion. When they close Catholic schools and force children into the secular schools; they should also close down the Churches which are headed by liberal priests and women religious priest impersonators. They should send some undercover detectives to hear some of these priests who compromise the true faith ;refuse to let them lead a parish, retreat,or any office within the Church.Poor Padre Pio was restricted for being in the public’s eye???Also Solanus Casey was only a doorkeeper. These traitors should be punishes for undermining the Holy Father and Church law.

  • Bill

Clearly the HRCC is not a democracy. That being said, the laity can exert some influence by closing their checkbooks or earmarking the donations that they do make.

  • Rich

Contrary to obvious popular opinion, the Holy Roman Catholic Church is not a democracy. There is one eartly leader: Pope Benedict XVI. There can never be leadership by committee of lay people in the Church, this is a description of all the protestant churches. That’s why there are so many of them, and none of them have all the truth. If heaven is your goal, stay the course by following the Pope of Rome.

  • Bill

    Jack,

I can find no information that Fr. Wurm is pro choice.

  • Janet

Though old news, I recently read that a high ranking Communist official admitted to Archbishop Fulton Sheen that his job was to see that the Catholic Church was destroyed from within. At Sheen’s urging, Bella Dodd gave his sworn testimony that he personally planted 1200 spy agents in Seminaries in starting in the 1920’s and 1930’s. They were to sow confusion, discord and division. I am sure Satan has continued to deceive others to do this task. What can we learn from this? We are in a spiritual battle. Satan’s tactics are to have us question what we are called to obey, and package temptation to be attractive, and even seem good. As Catholics we are blessed with the protection of the Magisterium of the Church. God’s ways are not our ways, we do not know better than Him. The Church is guided by the Holy Spirit, not popular opinion. We need to pray for those who think acceptance and promotion of error is showing compassion. This does not help our brothers and sisters or the Body of Christ. We need to pray, be a witness to fidelity, be prepared to speak the truth. God bless.

  • Ann Couper-Johnston

The person above who quoted St Paul got it in one. Vatican II somehow got caught up with the spirit of the age and “the Spirit of Vatican II” became the excuse for all sorts of excesses. I abhor that interpretation! Fortunately we have someone among us who is in a position to interpret Vatican II because he was there, someone who knows the dangers of conforming to the spirit of the age as secular society has it because his childhood was lived in the Third Reich ….

once again, thank God for our German Shepherd and all who are faithful to Our Holy Father, Benedict XVI.

May God richly bless this man who has such a great burden laid on his shoulders – the loneliest and most responsible job in the world. May Our Lord accompany him in every circumstance – Sts Edith Stein and Maximillian Kolbe pray for him, his Blessed predecessor pray for him.

  • Barbara Weddleton

How arrogant are these women to have the audacity to call themselves “Roman Catholic Priests”. And liberal Catholics? They are not Catholics. They are HERETICS !! Any priest who entertaines such heresy should be defrocked. I am consoled by the words Our Lord said pertaining to the Catholic Church “And the gates of hell shall not prevail”.

  • Gene

Jesus preached repentance and obedience, not discord and rebellion. In the over 2000 years since Christ’s Passion the human race has not fundamentally changed and the will of the Father has not changed.
Romans 12:2 “Do not conform yourself to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.”
If the will of the Father was in accordance with these things being advocated here then Jesus would have revealed them to us. He did not.
We think that because today’s society has become corrupted that we must also corrupt the Church by conforming to the ways of the world. It is not so. Jesus gave us the Blessed Virgin as our model for human behavior. This model is one of humility, obedience, faith, and love for our God, our neighbor and for God’s Truth and Way and Life. The Internet and cell phones do not change God’s will for us. Because we openly rebel against God’s ways and teachings does not mean that God’s will changes to align with ours. On the contrary we risk eternal damnation by our open rebellion. If we refuse to hear God’s message, our deafness does not redeem us. If we refuse to recognize God’s will, our blindness does not save us. If we refuse to preach God’s Word, our blasphemy only further hardens our hearts against our kind and Eternal Father. Let us pray that we can humble ourselves, show penitence and show contrition before our God for our sins instead of seeking to test God’s patience and love for us. His love for us is beyond all human understanding but we must strive to discover His will not to try to redefine His will to our desires and likes and dislikes.
